THE BANKS KITCHEN SHOP STORY
With the love of family and the community, Banks Kitchen Shop was established in 1939 in District Six, Cape Town. It was started by Avraham Bank and his son Abba Bank – which made Banks Kitchen Shop a family shop and remains in the family. The Banks Kitchen Shop that was in District Six was a shop where you could get anything you needed for your kitchen much like today. Banks had two divisions: the hiring and selling divisions, however, the hiring section was sold many years ago.
As of today, Banks Kitchen Shop at 77 Sir Lowry Road, Cape Town has managed to capture the spirit of the store in District 6 that was nurtured by Abba & Majorie Bank. With its roots in family and the community, it is still a family business run by (the late) Ian Cohen & Debbie Cohen & their children - 3rd & 4th generation family members.
We at Banks Kitchen Shop are all about people that’s why our staff are welcoming, cordial and helpful. There is always some friendly banter that creates the chaos and energy of the past, and that’s why we have remained successful for so long.
The shop is continuously changing, being updated to accommodate the mix of retail shoppers while still focusing our attention on the hospitality trade. There are very few people in the Cape Town hospitality industry who aren’t familiar with the Banks Kitchen shop, that has been servicing the industry with all their kitchen and catering needs for 80+ years.
