Inspiring Woman: Kerry Kilpin
Kerry, tell us brief about yourself & your back ground. How did your love for baking / cooking develop?
"I am the daughter of a pineapple farmer who grew up in Bathurst the Eastern Cape. I have always loved food from a young age. I use to bake and sell my cakes to the farm workers at pay day on the farm. Later on during my boarding school days I would bake and sell at school. I only ever wanted to study at Silwood. So straight after school I went to study at Silwood kitchens. This is were I really fell in love with cooking. As a child my passion was baking. In my second year I was fortunate enough to work at La Colombe and met Franck Dangereux. I worked with Franck for 12 years first at La Colombe for 4,5 year and then when he opened the Foodbarn I went along as his head chef. He has been a huge mentor in my career. In 2014 I decided it was time to spread my wings and "fly the nest" and moved to headup Bistro 1682 on Steenberg Wine Estate."
What sort of food do your serve and what are your favourite ingredients?
"I love to serve what I like to eat. My food is influenced by places I have traveled to. You will notice a Asian influences from my trip to Thailand and our tapas menu from time spend in Barcelona
My favorite ingredients have to be Garlic, chilli and butter"

Cheffing is not an easy career. You need to be prepared mentally from long hours, time away from friend and family, okay with missing out on special occasions birthdays, Christmas, wedding etc. If after all of this you feel strongly and passionately for this industry. Do it, it can be incredibly rewarding you will only stick it out if you are truly love what you do.
