Inspiring Woman: Sarah Dugmore

Sarah, please tell us brief about yourself & your back ground

I am passionate about creating beautiful spaces and simple, yet elegant and delicious food.I love how the combination of these two things can turn strangers into friends in a matter of minutes.

I have combined my love of interior décor and my knowledge of food to create a company that specialises in events and catering. From the smaller, more intimate event, to the grand celebration, Le Sel is there.

My background is a combination of Interior décor and Sales Management within the hospitality industry. When I moved from the décor world into Hospitality, and the supply thereof, my creative side found an outlet in food and plating, and so the inspiration laid seed.

It took a few years, but it all finally came together when we found the property that we are currently based in.It is a Heritage space in the Southern Suburbs which we have renovated and added onto in order to create a bespoke, warm space that feels as though you have stepped back a few decades, taking you back to a time when life was slower and time was taken to appreciate the simple things.

We offer small boutique events from our home, such as Lunches/Brunches, High Tea’s, Baby showers etc. Along with which we are in the process of launching our social dining space, from which we will be running bi-weekly events such as supper clubs and wine tastings.

How did your love for baking / cooking develop?

I have always loved cooking. There is no greater gift for me than the gift of hospitality.I love to have our friends and family in our home, sharing our lives and enjoying delicious food!

Being a part of Banks for almost a decade was hugely instrumental in me finding my path into making a career from this.I had always loved decorating spaces, now I get to decorate with food – providing dishes that are not only beautiful to look at, but delicious to eat.

What sort of food do your serve and what are your favourite ingredients?

Every meal is bespoke and each menu is tailored to my client’s choice. However my favorite thing to do is to bake. There is something about cakes and desserts that bring out the fun in people. It is as though they let their guards down as they indulge!

My favorite cuisine is definitely Italian! The Italians know how to turn the simple into the sublime and with minimal ingredients, you can have a dish that is comforting, beautiful to behold, and banging with flavour.

The ingredients that you will always find in my kitchen are fresh spinach, tins of tomato’s, pasta flour, olive oil, parmesan and good quality dark chocolate.Oh, and wine.Never forget the wine.

What are your TOP 5 kitchen tools to use?

My cannot-live-without tools are:

1) My Microplane

2) My Food-Processor

Bosch Food Processor Compact 800W

3) My Wusthof Classic Flexible Filleting Knife

Please share a short word of encouragement for young girls wanting to pursue a career in the industry

I am not sure I am qualified to give that type of advise – however I would say that we are living in an era when women in business, no matter what the field, are celebrated!I have had people book my services simply to support me as a woman entrepreneur. It is humbling and awe-inspiring.If you are willing to invest in yourself – and have passion – you will be blown away by the support you will find in the most un-expected places.
